My MFA Thesis, Process As Protest, is a series of experiments in which certain capitalistic and technological pressures that fuel our 24/7 environment are re-examined through a creative process designed to slow down, reinterpret, and abstract their fast-paced nature in an effort to understand and relate to media in a new, more critical way.

Through this experience, I was able to create interesting forms that ultimately turned the intangible high-frequency/high-stress digital experience, into something low-fi, physical, textured, and at times even calming.

About
Lazy LoadingAdobe’s online portfolio platform, Behance, is a microcosm of society’s larger problem of the disproportion between human’s ability to consume and the infinite amount of imagery available for 24/7 viewing. Each color shown represents the dominant color that Behance assigns to each image in its source code. When scrolling, dominant colors will appear until the page has loaded properly, which is programed through code known as lazy loading. Behance’s source code on the back of the scroll—the width of an iPhone—asks the audience to consider the structure, display, and format of this information. The entire scroll was installed on an apparatus that allows the audience to pull or “scroll through” the stream of colors.Lazy Loading’s endless scroll tells the story that each individual color is less important than the sheer volume of them all together and slows down the continuous flow of imagery to bring what is intrinsically digital into the physical world. Apparatus: Cardboard and wood dowel; 13.5 x 5.75 inches Scroll: Printed on newsprint; Width - 2.75 inches, Length - Endless Artificial MediumContent generated from Medium and similar online platforms, are part of a daily media diet that implies our need to stay in constant production and consumption for fear of falling into social or professional irrelevance. In part-one of Artificial Medium, a manually generated database of 5,550 Medium headlines related to productivity, remote working, and COVID-19 is fed into AI technology to generate new and related content based on the source material.The result is a slew of new uncanny valley-esque headlines and photos that almost seem written and produced by a human hand. This mashup of content can seem unusual, humorous, and ephemeral—perhaps only relevant in our current age of COVID-19.In part-two I used the AI generated content to design stamps which, like the emails we receive from Medium and other content generating platforms, facilitate the act of communicating information and the consumption of media.The collection of stamps brings the analog and digital worlds together, while the original content that fueled our culture of hyper-productivity is distorted and manipulated until the pressure we once felt to produce and consume turns to humor and eccentricity.Stamps: 1.5 x 2 inches Envelopes: 5.75 x 4.25 inches MFA Thesis Book: Process As Protest Against Our 24/7 EnvironmentProcess As Protest is more than a synopsis of my MFA thesis work, it's a story about my journey as an MFA-Graphic Design student and my values as a designer. I began my thesis journey determined to use a specific, pre-determined design process to examine certain technologies through a critical lens. Through my thesis experience, and through the making of this book, I learned that process doesn’t have to mean following hard rules. It can simply be about using the tools you enjoy to create work you feel excited about. And then doing it again. And again. What holds importance to me, is using my creative process—however it may change over time—to create work that I consider a natural extension of who I am as a person.
